If I Were Queen of New Mexico

I often joke that I would make some changes if I were appointed Queen of New Mexico, especially after watching disheartening news about local crime that affects our communities and, most importantly, our children. It pains me to see the challenges they face and the innocence lost to violence and neglect. Then I thought, what would be my first changes if I were really appointed Queen? Where would I start? Here’s a little exercise in sharing my vision for a better New Mexico, focusing on the changes I would make to positively impact our youth, who are the very future of our state.

Step 1: Tax What Hurts Us, Fund What Heals Us

My first decree would focus on revamping our tax system. I would impose higher taxes on harmful substances... tobacco, nicotine, alcohol, and marijuana... maybe even sodas... and ensure that every penny collected is dedicated to public education. This funding wouldn’t merely disappear into bureaucratic black holes; it would be earmarked for specific, life-changing programs that directly benefit our children. By targeting what harms us, we create an opportunity to invest in healing and building a brighter future for the next generation.

Step 2: Bring Arts Back Into Schools

Next on my agenda would be to revive the arts in our schools. Arts programs are not just “fun electives”; they are essential lifelines that provide children with purpose, self-expression, and a sense of belonging. I would ensure that arts education is accessible in every school, particularly in underserved communities where such opportunities are scarce. Participation in these programs would be free for families, but it would come with a requirement... students must maintain their grades to join the enriching activities and field trips, fostering a sense of responsibility alongside creativity.

Step 3: Transportation = Opportunity

For many children, especially those without stable parental support, school serves as their sanctuary. To ensure that every child can benefit from after-school programs, I would expand transportation services to include before and after school options. No child should be left behind due to logistical challenges; every child deserves access to safe and enriching activities, regardless of their home situation.

Step 4: Smaller Classes, More Support

Teachers in New Mexico often find themselves overworked and underappreciated, expected to work miracles with limited resources. I would prioritize reducing class sizes and ensuring that every teacher has a dedicated aide. This would provide students with the one-on-one attention they need and allow educators to focus on their passion... teaching. By investing in our teachers, we invest in our children’s futures, creating a nurturing environment where learning can truly flourish.

Step 5: Address Crime with Accountability and Compassion

The alarming rates of crime affecting our children cannot be ignored. As Queen, I would ensure that mental health and addiction services are readily available... no long waiting lists, no frustrating delays. Compassion must be coupled with accountability; those who refuse help while continuing to commit crimes must face the consequences of their actions. We must create a justice system that not only protects victims but also offers pathways to recovery for those struggling with addiction.

In conclusion, I believe that these initiatives could ignite a profound transformation in New Mexico, offering our children hope, structure, and opportunity. By investing in education, the arts, supportive environments, and a compassionate yet accountable approach to crime, we can reshape the future of our state. Together, we can cultivate a thriving community where every child can flourish and where their stories are filled with promise rather than despair.

This has been a fun little exercise in envisioning change for my beloved state. While I know I wont be queen,  I will continue to do what I can, little by little, to make a difference in the lives of our children and our communities. Every small action counts, and together, we can create a brighter future for New Mexico.
